Is My Cedar Dying? Normal Flagging vs. True Dieback
Here is the direct answer: if the browning is scattered through the interior of the canopy, appears in late summer or fall, and the branch tips stay green, your cedar is fine — that is normal flagging, the tree shedding 3- to 4-year-old foliage it no longer needs. If the browning starts at the top of the tree, kills whole branch tips, thins the crown so you can see through it, or shows up in spring and early summer, that is decline. Use this checklist:
- Normal: Interior Flagging in Late Summer and Fall: Every cedar drops old interior foliage annually, and in dry years the flagging is heavier and more dramatic. The dead sprays sit inside the canopy on the older wood, turn cinnamon-brown, and eventually fall. Branch tips and the treetop stay green. Heavy flagging after a dry summer looks alarming but is the tree budgeting — not dying.

Why Are Cedars Dying Across the Puget Sound Region?
This is not folklore — it is an active research area. Scientists at Washington State University run a dedicated western redcedar dieback research program, and the WSU Puyallup plant clinic tracks redcedar decline reports from across the state. The emerging consensus: the primary driver is climate — hotter, drier summers and multi-year drought stress — rather than a single insect or disease:
- Drought Stress Is the Primary Driver: Western red cedar is a water-loving species with a shallow root system, adapted to the cool, moist Northwest of the past several thousand years. The record heat and drought years of the last decade — 2015, 2017, 2018, 2021's heat dome, and the dry summers since — pushed cedars on marginal sites past what they can tolerate. Dieback shows up worst on dry, thin, or disturbed soils: bluff edges, south-facing slopes, compacted lots, and pavement-adjacent plantings.
- Secondary Pests Finish Weakened Trees: Bark beetles and root-disease fungi are opportunists that move into drought-weakened cedars. They are usually a symptom of the underlying stress rather than the original cause — which is why spraying rarely fixes a declining cedar, and why the useful interventions are about water and root health.
- Site History Matters: Cedars that decline in yards often turn out to have a construction story: grading that cut roots, fill soil over the root zone, new hardscape that redirected water, or irrigation that was shut off after establishment. A cedar that thrived for decades and declined after a site change is telling you what happened.

If your cedar is browning, you are not doing something uniquely wrong — but trees near homes deserve individual attention because of what they can hit when they fail.
Can a Browning Cedar Recover? What Actually Helps
A cedar with flagging or early-stage stress can absolutely recover, and a cedar with a dead top can sometimes stabilize and live for many more years. What helps is unglamorous:
- Deep, Infrequent Summer Watering: The single most effective intervention. A long, slow soak of the root zone — out to the dripline, not just at the trunk — every 2 to 4 weeks from July through September mimics the moist summers cedars evolved with. A soaker hose left running for a few hours does more than daily sprinkler minutes ever will.
- Mulch the Root Zone: Three to four inches of arborist wood chips over the root zone (kept off the trunk) holds soil moisture, buffers soil temperature, and feeds the soil biology cedars depend on. It is the cheapest tree care there is.
- Protect the Roots: No trenching, grading, fill soil, new pavement, or soil compaction inside the dripline. Cedar roots are shallow and wide, and root damage from a project often shows up as crown decline two to three summers later.
- Do Not Fertilize a Stressed Tree, and Do Not Top It: Nitrogen pushes foliage growth a water-limited tree cannot support, and topping a cedar to 'reduce stress' removes the crown it needs to feed itself while opening decay columns. Neither helps. Dead-wooding — removing the dead material properly — is the right pruning response to dieback.
When a Declining Cedar Becomes a Hazard
Most browning cedars are a health question, not a safety emergency. The transition to hazard happens in specific, checkable ways, and it is what a professional hazard tree assessment is for:
- Dead Tops Over Targets: A dead top is brittle wood held high over whatever is below. Over a lawn, it can often be monitored or removed as a dead-wooding job while the tree stays. Over a roof, driveway, or walkway, dead-top removal or full removal moves up the priority list — especially before the October-through-March storm season.
- Extensive Crown Death: When more than roughly a third to half of the crown is dead, the tree's odds of recovery drop sharply and the accumulating deadwood becomes a continuous shedding hazard. On bluff and slope lots — where cedars also do erosion-control work holding the hillside — the remove-or-retain decision needs to weigh both the hazard and what the roots are stabilizing.
- Root or Butt Decay Signs: Conks or mushrooms at the base, a hollow sound, carpenter-ant frass, or a new lean indicate the failure risk is structural, not just cosmetic. A cedar can look mostly green and still be compromised at the base — this is exactly the failure mode an on-the-ground assessment catches and a sidewalk glance does not.
